The Technique That Creates the Shimmer of Water — Ceramics Edition

"The Technique No One Notices"

I layer blue glaze, brush stroke by delicate brush stroke, using generous amounts of water — imagining a clear water-blue emerging from what is, at this stage, an opaque, ash-grey glaze, building depth and shade as I go.

I repeat this layering up to sixty times, over the course of three days.

When fired in the kiln, the glaze turns transparent. And yet that particular freshness — the kind found in water in nature — along with its gentle, shimmering movement, rarely comes together. The success rate is roughly one in ten.

I keep working toward that one in ten. Wanting to reach something that speaks more deeply to the heart, I change the composition of both glaze and clay every year. The way I apply the glaze changes too.

This path, this technique, has now continued for twenty-eight years. Having been a ceramic artist for over thirty-five years, I suppose I've simply become absorbed in it.

And still, to this day, no one notices this technique. No one really knows it exists. But it seems that, for many people, the sense of comfort it creates comes through on its own — and that makes me happy.
